Chapter Seventeen
She’s a knockout, the whole world agrees.
She’s Belinda, a polar bear tease.
She’s a Bearoness now.
So she really knows how
To give male bears the deep Arctic freeze.
Chita closed up the cell phone and looked around for the otter. Where had that little jerk gone? “Otto, hey Otto!”
“Here!”
She looked around, and he was standing behind her. She could have sworn he wasn’t there a second ago. “Where have you been?”
“Right here!”
“No, you weren’t. I would have smelled you.” Something wasn’t right here. Oh, oh! A feline epiphany! Suddenly, Miss Lee-Li-Li wasn’t the only one hit by a ton of bricks. (All right, a ton of stones. Let’s stop this pedantic bickering!) She stared at the otter and said, “Do me a favor. Walk to that shed over there and come back again.”
“Why??”
“Humor me!”
“OK!”
“Well, go ahead!”
“I just did!”
“Do it again.”
“This is silly. All right, satisfied?”
“Did you notice anything unusual?”
“Aside from the fact that you’re asking me to do dopey things, no!”
“Otto, my little sweetheart. I don’t know how to tell you this, but the Duck’s super serum has kicked back in again. You are zapping back and forth faster than the eye can see.”
“No, I’m not!”
“Trust me, Otto, you are.”
“Trust you? You gotta be kidding. You kitnap me, tie me up, threaten me and dump me off at this creepy docksite after admitting you’re a criminal, and I’m supposed to trust you? Give me a break!”
“Well, seen in that light, I can understand why you might be a bit dubious. But wait a second. What else can you do when the spirits are upon you?”
“I can make things move without touching them, but there’s nothing wrong with me. That serum wore off a long time ago.”
“You can make things move without touching them? OK, just for the fun of it, without touching it, toss that stone over there into the river.”
“Cut it out, Cat. I‘m in no mood for fooling around. Either let me go or…”
“Or what? Roowwrr!!” Splash! Cheetah suddenly found herself up to her nose in murky river water.
“Oh, gee, I’m sorry. I just wished I could toss you in the river instead of the stone, and I guess I did. Wow!!! Maybe you’re right. Gee!! What do I do now?”
The snarling, soaking, sputtering cat crawled up over the jetty. Her first reaction was to tear the otter into little pieces. Her second reaction was to forget her first reaction. This needed some thinking and…scheming.
“OK, Otto, just stop wishing, or at least stop wishing about moving things (and me) around. Let’s discuss this.”
“I don’t want to discuss anything. I want to get as far away as I can from you and that crazy duck and the ugly baboon and that whole house of horrors over there on that island.”
“That, my dear Otto, is exactly what I have in mind with one minor variation.
